Global air charter specialist Chapman Freeborn, part of the Avia Solutions Group, successfully completed the high-priority transport of two oversized truck-loading skids for Tropicana Airlines Ltd. The operation involved moving the nearly 9-meter units from Zhangjiagang, China, to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, via a strategic stop in Liège, Belgium.
The challenging delivery was executed under a strict deadline, with the first shipment reaching its intermediate destination in Europe within a remarkable 72-hour window.
Oversized Cargo and Complex Route
The cargo units, identified as truck-loading skids, presented a significant logistical challenge due to their dimensions.
Cargo Specifications:
- Units: Two oversized truck-loading skids.
- Dimensions: 870 x 210 x 225 cm each.
- Weight: Approximately 5 tons each.
- Aircraft: Nose-loading Boeing 747-400F, necessary for handling the outsized dimensions.
The movement was split into two batches. Both shipments utilized a nose-loading Boeing 747-400F for the long-haul segment from Zhangjiagang, China, to Liège Airport (LGG), Belgium. From Liège, Chapman Freeborn’s UK team managed the subsequent air freight and transfer to the final destination in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Operational Challenges and Solutions
The success of the mission hinged on overcoming two primary obstacles: the sheer size of the cargo and the client’s stringent time constraints.
- Unpackaged Arrival: The units initially arrived at the departure point in China unpackaged. The Chapman Freeborn China team swiftly organized expert professional packaging to ensure the necessary security and safety standards for air transport.
- Tight Deadline: The client required an extremely swift turnaround. The team achieved successful completion of the collection-to-departure phase for the first shipment within approximately 72 hours through precise coordination across continents.
Jason de Beer, Cargo Charter Broker at Chapman Freeborn, noted that the tailored approach provided both efficiency and cost savings for the client. By dividing the delivery into two stages, the company avoided the cost of a single, full charter that would otherwise have been required.
The operation demonstrated the company’s ability to function as a highly coordinated global team, with the China division handling collection, packing, and the first flight segment, and the UK team managing the onward delivery to Africa, all while providing the client with continuous photographic and video updates.
