China Airlines has finalized a major order with Boeing for up to 23 777X aircraft, becoming the first carrier in Taiwan to commit to Boeing’s next-generation widebody family. The order includes 10 777-9 passenger jets and four 777-8 Freighters, with additional purchase options for five more 777-9s and four 777-8Fs, significantly expanding the airline’s future long-haul passenger and cargo operations.
The order, originally booked in March 2025 as an unidentified customer on Boeing’s order log, strengthens China Airlines’ long-term partnership with Boeing while positioning the carrier for sustained growth in both intercontinental passenger travel and air cargo markets.
“As a long-time operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are excited to welcome Boeing’s newest 777X family into our world-class fleet,” said Kao Shing-Hwang, Chairman of China Airlines. “The advanced technology of the 777-9 will deliver a superior passenger experience on long-haul routes, while the 777-8 Freighter will strengthen our leadership position in air cargo through its fuel efficiency, range, and payload capability.”
The 777X’s enhanced range and fuel burn efficiency are key factors behind the carrier’s fleet renewal strategy. The 777-9 offers a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km), carrying up to 426 passengers in a standard two-class configuration while reducing fuel consumption and emissions by 20% compared to previous-generation aircraft. The larger cabin cross-section and quieter cabin environment are also central to China Airlines’ focus on elevating passenger comfort on long-haul services to North America and Europe.
For cargo operations, the 777-8 Freighter offers 747-class payload capacity while achieving 30% greater fuel efficiency and emissions reduction, alongside a 60% smaller noise footprint — attributes that directly support China Airlines’ fleet modernization goals and long-term sustainability commitments. The new freighters will integrate seamlessly into the airline’s existing fleet of Boeing twin-engine freighters, simplifying operational commonality across its cargo division.
Boeing executives emphasized the strategic nature of the deal, both for the carrier and the wider market. “We are pleased to welcome China Airlines to the 777X customer family,” said Brad McMullen, Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing at Boeing. “This order builds on our nearly 60-year partnership, dating back to the 707 and 727 programs, and reflects China Airlines’ continued confidence in Boeing’s twin-aisle product strategy.”
With the addition of China Airlines, Boeing has now secured more than 520 orders for the 777X program globally. The aircraft are assembled at Boeing’s Everett, Washington facility, supporting thousands of aerospace jobs across its U.S. manufacturing footprint and global supply chain.
Beyond the 777X order, China Airlines is also scheduled to take delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliners as part of its broader fleet renewal plan, further consolidating its position as one of Asia’s leading long-haul and air cargo operators.
The order reflects a broader market trend as airlines in the Asia-Pacific region continue to recalibrate widebody fleets to support long-haul capacity growth while maintaining strong cargo uplift capabilities amid sustained demand for cross-border e-commerce, high-value exports, and diversified global trade flows.
