High-Capacity AGVs and Advanced Data Systems Set New Benchmarks for Smart Cargo Operations
China Eastern Air Logistics (CEAL) has reached a major milestone in the modernization of its operations with the full implementation of six high-capacity Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Developed by Lödige Industries, these latest-generation vehicles are now operational in Cargo Terminal 4, transforming the facility into a next-generation “smart” cargo hub.
Each 10-foot AGV is engineered to transport unit load devices (ULDs) weighing up to 6.8 tonnes, establishing a new industry standard for heavy-lift automation. By replacing manual transport with autonomous routing, the system minimizes the risk of ULD damage and ensures a steady, 24/7 cargo flow even during peak operational periods.

Technical Precision and Data-Driven Intelligence
The AGV fleet is fully integrated with Lödige Industries’ proprietary Cargo Professional Suite, an advanced terminal management system. This software acts as the “brain” of the operation, providing:
- Real-Time Tracking: Intelligent cargo flow planning and end-to-end tracking of every ULD movement.
- Visualized Analytics: Real-time operational insights accessible via mobile devices for precise decision-making.
- Omnidirectional Maneuvering: Advanced drive technology that allows for high agility in tight terminal spaces.
The AGVs also work in harmony with China’s first lift-and-run system, another Lödige innovation at the terminal, to further boost overall throughput.
A Growing Partnership for Future Growth
The deployment follows a successful period of testing and commissioning, with all six German-manufactured units officially handed over to CEAL this month. Weddy Pan, Senior Deputy Manager at CEAL, noted that the system has completely transformed their operational model, providing the efficiency and adaptability required for sustained growth in the competitive logistics sector.
This project underscores the long-standing collaboration between CEAL and Lödige Industries, which has previously included refurbishments of Elevating Transfer Vehicle (ETV) and Transfer Vehicle (TV) systems. By integrating these cutting-edge digital solutions, CEAL is effectively reducing its reliance on fixed infrastructure and manual labor, allowing its workforce to focus on high-value management tasks.
