Cathay Cargo has secured the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Lithium Batteries recertification. As one of the first carriers in Asia to achieve this accreditation, the recertification reinforces the airline’s commitment to safety and operational excellence in handling dangerous goods.
The recertification is a key component of the refreshed Cathay Dangerous Goods shipment solution. The updated service introduces new measures to ensure the safe carriage and segregated storage of all nine classes of dangerous goods, with a particular focus on lithium-ion batteries.
Digital Innovation and Enhanced Safety Protocols
The refreshed solution offers new flexibility for shippers, including a build-up solution for multiple fire-resistant bags. This innovation increases space efficiency for larger shipments by 50% and allows for the safe transport of larger individual battery sizes. Cathay Cargo also launched a new digital Lithium Batteries Shipper Approval Request Form to streamline the approval process.
To prevent the transport of misdeclared and undeclared dangerous goods, the airline has implemented new screening processes at the Cathay Cargo Terminal in Hong Kong, which utilize AI technology to identify potential risks. The company’s training and guidance program for forwarders, the Cargo Agent Operation Programme, has also been expanded to more locations worldwide.
According to Tim Wong, Cathay Cargo’s General Manager of Cargo Service Delivery, the refreshed solution ensures that the required precision for safe and seamless transport of dangerous goods is visible at every stage of the journey.
