DHL Partnership Air France KLM Martinair Cargo Emission Reduction Framework

DHL Global Forwarding and Air France KLM Martinair Cargo have signed a new framework agreement aimed at supporting emission reductions in the air freight sector. The agreement builds on the companies’ partnership established in 2022 and introduces a structured focus on emission reduction rights and book-and-claim mechanisms.

Under the framework, the two companies will work on developing market-ready book-and-claim models to support the wider adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and verified CO₂e emission reductions. DHL Global Forwarding has also signed a work order covering 35,000 metric tonnes of well-to-wheel CO₂e emission reduction rights.

Henk Venema, Executive Vice President of Global Air Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, said the agreement demonstrated how collaboration can support decarbonisation in air freight. He noted that emission reduction rights provide predictability, scalability and transparency, which are key to accelerating the impact of SAF across the market.

The agreement moves beyond transactional SAF procurement and focuses on a longer-term approach combining fuel adoption with digital verification processes. The partners said this structure is intended to support measurable and scalable emission reductions, even where sustainable fuels are not physically available on specific trade lanes.

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo has been one of DHL’s long-standing carrier partners and a participant in DHL’s GoGreen Carrier Evaluation Programme. The two companies also collaborate on industry initiatives designed to promote standards, transparency and practical approaches to more sustainable air freight.

GertJan Roelands, Senior Vice President Commercial at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, said the renewed agreement reflected continued cooperation on SAF and a shared commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the air cargo industry.

The partnership supports DHL Group’s wider objective of increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuels to 30 per cent by 2030. The framework agreement was signed in Amsterdam during a ceremony attended by representatives from both companies.
